Family members should be encouraged to proceed to the hospital in private cars, rather than ride in the ambulance. A convincing argument could be that the patient may be treated and released and will need transportation home. 2. When the family member insists, one person may be allowed to ride along with the driver. If a person rides in the cab they must use their seat belt, it is the drivers responsibility to assure that this is done. The paramedics discretion will be the deciding factor. 3. In the case of children not seriously injured, a parent may accompany the child in the modular. If the child is seriously injured a parent will not be allowed in the back, but may ride in the front (in this case the seriousness should be explained to the parent). A really hysterical parent may add to the hazards of the driver as well. In all cases, the paramedics discretion will be the deciding factor. 4. Persons traveling to the hospital by car should always be reminded that it is unsafe and unlawful to try to keep up with the ambulance, and, if possible, be given clear instructions on how to find the hospital.
