Hazardous Materials Response Team

The Hazmat Team is composed of members from the three emergency response jurisdictions of Fayette County, Peachtree City Fire/Rescue, Fayette Co. EMA, and Fayetteville Fire Department.  The Team responds to hazardous materials emergencies throughout the southern crescent of Metro Atlanta. The Team maintains two response trailers, each capable of mitigating an incident. The trailers are located at Fayette Co. Station #6 in Brooks, Ga. and at Station #83 in Peachtree City.

The Hazardous Materials Team consists of 42 certified HAZMAT technicians, supported by HAZMAT operations certified personnel of the associated fire departments. Peachtree City provides 21 personnel certified at Technician Level, to the HAZ-MAT Team and is made up of career personnel from all three shifts and volunteer personnel.

All members (including those firefighters not on the HAZ-MAT team) of the Peachtree City Fire/Rescue are certified to at least HAZ-MAT Awareness Level.  All of the career firefighters are further certified to Operations Level of certification.

Annual training consists of three scenario driven incidents, requiring the use of the basic components of a HAZMAT response: Identification, Containment, Mitigation and Decontamination.  Every Department is also required to conduct individual training with its technicians to maintain certification.

The Hazardous Materials Team falls under the Incident Command System during an emergency. A liaison officer confers with command, operations officer conduct the activities of the team, science and safety officers supports the response action plan. Safety of the team and the public are paramount factors in all HAZMAT responses.
