Fire prevention is the first line of
firefighting. It is the most effective, the most efficient, the
least painful, and the least expensive. Fire Safety Education is
the cornerstone of prevention. Most people who have died as a
result of fire were dead before a call for help was ever
transmitted. Responding Firefighters, no matter how well trained
and equipped, could not have saved them. But they could have
easily saved themselves by prevention and proper immediate
action. We have provided instruction to more than 20,000
children since the inception of the program. Currently there are
4,000 children in our city. Each of these children needs to know
and practice Fire Safety and Burn Prevention. There has only
been one fire-related death in Peachtree City since the program
began, but there have been several severe injuries that clearly
demonstrate the need for continuing Fire Safety Education.
Several
adults
have also been injured as a result of gasoline vapor fires.
Our Fire Safety and Burn Prevention Program includes:
clowning skits and puppet shows for fire safety and burn
prevention, stop-drop and roll, exit drills in the home (EDITH),
fire station tours, apparatus demonstrations, friendly
Firefighter, presentations on fall prevention for seniors, CPR
and first aid, fire extinguisher use, proper placement and
functioning of fire and smoke alarms, and carbon monoxide
alarms. These services are available to schools, pre-schools,
day care centers, church and civic groups, scouting
organizations, and special events.

The Fire Marshal conducts plan reviews and inspections
of commercial and industrial buildings, and investigates fires
as needed. Shift personnel also conduct annual inspections of
businesses. Requirements are based upon the National Fire and
Life Safety Codes, and the Southern Building and Mechanical
Codes.
