Peachtree City Fire Department
EMS Bike Team
”Delivering rapid, efficient emergency medical care on wheels”

Mission:
The Peachtree City Fire Department EMS Bike Team provides ALS level emergency medical services during specialized situations and events and serves as a mechanism for ongoing public relations and injury prevention activities.

The Peachtree City Fire & Rescue Department EMS Bike Team was established in November of 2004 for the purpose of enhancing and increasing the capabilities of the Department's ALS EMS services. The team currently consists of seven Paramedics and two Intermediate EMTs.

Each member has undergone extensive training conducted by the International Police Mountain Bike Association (IPMBA). The course includes instruction on handing, emergency maneuvers, maintenance, nutrition, and other related subjects. All team members are required to pass both the written and practical portions of the course.

Peachtree City Fire Department has placed four identical Trek 4500 Mountain Bikes into service. The Peachtree City Volunteer Fire Fighters’ Association provided additional funds for equipment and supplies, and the Optimist Club of Peachtree City made a donation for the purchase of special emergency response bags. The team is currently equipped with life-saving supplies including, automated external defibrillator (AED), oxygen and bandaging supplies.

The primary function of the team is to provide EMS services during special events within the city. Peachtree City hosts numerous events throughout the year that draw very large crowds including: the Fourth of July parade and fireworks show, the Great Georgia Air Show, the Shakerag Festival, the Peachtree Classic, and many others. It is not uncommon for these events to draw thousands of people. As a result, ambulance access to patients is limited, and requires difficult maneuvering, which can significantly increase response times. EMS Bike Teams, on the other hand, are able to access patients in hard to reach areas in an average of less than three minutes.

Team members conduct training exercises throughout the year on the city's multi-use paths. During training, members are equipped to provide care to patients they encounter. Members can easily be identified by their red and blue uniforms with Fire/EMS lettering and blue & silver bicycles.

If you have any questions about the EMS Bike Team, please contact the Team Director, Joseph O'Conor, at 770-631-2526.
