Crews Practice
Extrication Techniques
P.C.F.D. members recently had an opportunity to practice their
extrication skills during a one-day extrication refresher at the
P.C.F.D. training center. Vehicles were donated by a local
salvage yard and members were assigned various tasks to complete
on each vehicle. The training simulated what Firefighters
routinely encounter when they are called to extricate crash
victims from automobiles. The P.C.F.D. recently completed a new
extrication training pad that is specifically designed for this
type of training. All P.C.F.D. members are required to be
proficient in the use of specialized rescue tools and
extrication equipment. |

The “Baker’s Dozen” team of
Peachtree City Fire Department’s Sgt Clint Murphy, Sgt Mark Gelhardt and
FF/PM Ricky Howard, FF/EMT Jodi Blaess plus volunteer firefighters
Ciminnisi, Corsetti, Dyer, Half, Pakulski, Reddy, Russell, H. Waters and
J. Waters completed the grueling 14 hour Fit to Flight Relay on the
morning of 9 September. The relay is sponsored by Gold’s Gym.
Departing The Capitol steps in Atlanta at 1900, 9/8, the 13 with fire
department teams from Dalton, Cherokee and Cartersville followed GA Hwy
19/41 south through Griffin to the GPSTC (Georgia Public Safety Training
Center) in Forsyth; a distance of 75 miles.
Rules of the competition stated that two firefighters must always have
their “feet on the ground’, in full turnout gear minus boots, gloves and
liners. One member ran with a 30 lb.SCBA (self contained breathing
apparatus) pack and the other with a US flag.
Two buses and a RV, which provided “break havens’ between runs for
competitors, trailed runners. The Atlanta Police and Georgia State
Patrol provided escort along the entire route. Thanks ! A
little over 14 hours later the teams arrived at the fire academy and all
entered the facility together in a show of solidarity.
The all night trek left lasting memories, sore muscles and a
considerable amount of money for the line-of-duty death of DeKalb County
Firefighter Bill Craddock. |

Recruit Class
Graduates
On July 20,
2006 Peachtree City Fire/Rescue held it’s second graduation
ceremony of 2006 at Station 81. Twelve firefighters were
recognized for attending and passing National Professional
Qualifications (NPQ) Firefighter I. The course was 4
months long and included classroom and practical skills needed
to become a safe operating basic firefighter. Classroom
academics included basics of fire, safety on the fire ground,
personnel protection gear, Incident Command System, and many
other subjects. Many hours were spent in the “burn
building” and the bay practicing firefighting skills. The
recruits learned how to enter a ‘burning building” and conduct
search and rescue tasks, perform forced entry, advancing a
“charged” hose line to extinguish a fire, and ventilate the
smoke from a building. These were only a few of the skills
that had to be learned over the grueling four months of
training. At the completion of the class, the recruits had
to take a 150-question test and practical skills test, which
lasted all day. The following were recognized: Chris
Calhoun, Justin Corley, Jennifer Culpepper, David Druga,
Benjamin Hsieh, Zackery Mittenzwei, Jared Olmstead, Raghuram
Reddy, Mark Russell, Elmer Stancil, Cutis Urrutia, and John
Waters.
Also recognized
at this ceremony were the firefighters who had just passed First
Responder. The long-term goal of the Peachtree City
Fire/Rescue is have all volunteer firefighters at least
certified at the First Responder for EMS. At present there
are 2 volunteer paramedics, 7 EMT-I, 7 in EMT-I class, and 15
First responders. The following passed First Responder
class: Stephen Alligood, Candy Baczkowski, Chris Calhoun, John
Daily III, Gary Half, Daniel Klingler, Randy Stone, Doug Waters,
and Hal Waters.
The guest
speaker for the ceremony was Chief Dennis Rubin from Atlanta
Fire/Rescue. Following the outstanding speech by Chief Rubin the
new firefighters were presented their new helmets as the
recognition of joining the “brotherhood” of firefighters.
The firefighters significant family member or friend presented
the new helmets to them. About 75 friends and family
of the “new” firefighters attended the ceremony. Following
the presentation, refreshments were served along with
opportunities for pictures. |

Department Participates in
Annual "Stand Down"
The Peachtree City Fire
Department recently participated in the nationwide initiative
"Firefighter Safety Stand Down" sponsored by the International
Association of Fire Chiefs. The program, now in its second year,
was designed to focus on firefighter safety and injury
prevention. During the stand down, all non-emergency activities
are suspended and the entire day is devoted to firefighter
safety, education and training.
The Stand Down
also serves to remind the citizens of Peachtree City to do their
part in keeping our community’s fire fighters safe. Remember to
pull to the right when you see fire trucks or ambulances
responding, and use caution when driving by emergency scenes
where Firefighters or Paramedics are helping accident victims.
Last year, 106 fire fighters died in the line of duty in the
United States; 26 of these deaths occurred in emergency
vehicle-related accidents. Thousands more were injured while on
duty. The purpose of the stand down is to call international
attention to these unacceptable numbers of line-of-duty deaths
and injuries and devote an entire day to the critical issue of
fire fighter safety. |

P.C.F.D. Launches ICE Program
If you should ever become incapacitated in case of an emergency,
Peachtree City emergency workers need a quick way to find out
whom they should contact. Paramedics, police and firefighters
often waste valuable time trying to figure out which name in a
cell phone to call when disaster strikes. They need to talk
immediately to a family member or close friend so you can get
the medical attention you need as soon as possible. Sgt.
Campbell of the PCFD launched Peachtree City’s' I.C.E. program
as a free and easy way to help emergency workers help you. All
you have to do is put the name of your emergency contact in your
cell phone’s phone book with the word "ICE" in front of it.
"ICE" stands for "In
Case
of Emergency."
For example, if your emergency contact is Sheila, you should put
"ICE -- Sheila" in your phone book. That way, emergency workers
treating you can quickly contact Sheila to get the information
about you that they need. You can also have more than one
emergency contact -- you just list them as ICE1, ICE2, and so
on. Take a look at the pictures on the right to see two examples
of cell phones with ICE contact information. The fire
department has ICE stickers located at all of its fire stations
free for the public to place on their phones to identify them as
an ICE participant. Rescue workers will be looking for the
sticker on either your cell phone or driver’s license.
The Peachtree City Fire and Rescue Department has notified and
trained its personnel to look for ICE numbers if they ever come
across an unconscious person in an accident. In addition, The
PCFD will be working with local cellular companies to promote
the new ICE program to their Peachtree City customers. Peachtree
City is the first emergency services agency in this region to
implement this program on such a large scale. Now that police
officers, firefighters and paramedics are on the lookout for ICE
numbers, putting your emergency contact in your phone could help
save your life one day in case of emergency. Please take a
moment to put your emergency contact information in your cell
phone today. |

EMS Bike Team Expands
The Peachtree City
EMS Bike Team congratulates Stephanie Fury, John Shires and David
Winkles on their successful completion of the International Police
Mountain Bike Association EMS Cyclist training course. The 40 hour
training program involved classroom and mountain bike training to
provide advanced patient care while covering events on bicycles.
These three
paramedics will join the six members who completed the IPMBA EMS Cyclist
in the fall of 2004. The department has a full complement of
equipment to outfit 4 bike medics simultaneously and will be purchasing
additional equipment to further expand patient care delivery capacity.
Our bike team has
provided advanced emergency medical support at many events in Peachtree
City including several running and bicycle races, the triathlon, 4th
of July Parade and the Air Show. Medics on Bikes have proven
approachable and well suited to operate in large crowds. Watch for
our bike team training on the cart paths or at events in the months

SRT Completes Training
The Peachtree City Swiftwater Rescue
Team (SRT) recently completed an intense three-day water rescue
course in Ellijay and Bluerigde on the Cartcay River. The
course, provided by Aquatech, is the first of a multi-level
training program in swiftwater rescue. Twelve members of the
department participated in, and successfully completed the
program, which allows the team members to participate in rescues
at the operations level. The Division Supervisor, Sgt. Andy Lee,
says that an SOP regarding the administration and deployment of
the team will be released very shortly. He hopes to have the
team fully operational by May 1st. The team wishes to thank
Jone's Bar-b-q of Temple for providing food during the training
session. Overall, the training was a great success and the
addition of the SRT to the capabilities of the Dive and Water
